The new exhibition at the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Paris, brings together two remarkable strands of India’s cultural heritage: Khadi, one of the most powerful symbols of India’s modern history, and the artistic legacy of Raja Ravi Varma, one of India’s most celebrated painters. In the simple act of spinning Khadi, Mahatma Gandhi saw the power to bring millions of Indians together, and gave India’s weavers and artisans a place at the heart of India’s freedom struggle. In a different yet powerful way, Raja Ravi Varma shaped how generations of Indians imagined their own stories and traditions. In this exhibition, more than 20 Khadi saris, woven in the intricate Jamdani technique, recreate celebrated paintings of Raja Ravi Varma. Here, Khadi literally becomes a canvas, bringing together Gandhi’s vision of the fabric with Ravi Varma’s visual legacy, and the extraordinary skill of India’s weavers.
Exhibition open until January 31, 2027 at Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (3 Av. de Lowendal 75007 Paris); Tuesday – Saturday 1100-1700 hrs.
